Sanusi Says Tinubu’s Tax Reforms Address Long-Avoided Structural Problems
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic and tax reforms are tackling difficult structural issues that previous administrations either avoided or failed to resolve, while cautioning that the measures must be matched with fiscal discipline and accountability.
Sanusi, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and an economist, said reforming Nigeria’s tax system is critical to strengthening the economy, reducing over-reliance on borrowing, and improving fairness in revenue collection. He noted that while the reforms may be painful in the short term, they are necessary to place the country on a more sustainable economic path.
However, the Emir’s comments were not an unqualified endorsement of the administration’s policies. He has repeatedly stressed that increased revenue must be accompanied by prudent government spending and transparency to achieve meaningful economic stability.
Sanusi’s position aligns with views previously expressed by other economists and international institutions, including the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, which have called for broader revenue mobilisation alongside structural reforms. At the same time, he has urged the government to clearly communicate its policies and manage the social impact of reforms on citizens.
His remarks have continued to generate debate, particularly among opposition figures and supporters of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, reflecting wider disagreements over the pace, design and priorities of Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms.
