The Kano State Government has joined the international community to mark World Malaria Day, reaffirming its commitment to reducing the burden of malaria across the state.

Data from Kano indicate significant progress in malaria control over the years. Since 2000, global efforts have led to major improvements, with hundreds of millions of people affected by malaria across endemic countries, while prevention and treatment interventions continue to expand.

Health officials noted that Nigeria remains one of the countries most affected by malaria.

In Kano State alone, over two million people visited health facilities for medical check-ups and were confirmed to have malaria.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, commended the State Government for its sustained efforts in tackling the disease. He revealed that statistics show a 70 percent reduction in malaria cases in the state, reflecting the impact of ongoing interventions.
Dr. Abubakar labaran Yusuf further explained that the government has invested over ₦5 billion in malaria control programmes, which include the procurement of essential medicines and the distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets to vulnerable populations.

He also urged residents to maintain clean environments and adopt preventive measures to reduce the spread of malaria, emphasizing that community participation remains critical in eliminating the disease.

World Malaria Day is observed annually on April 24 to raise awareness and strengthen global efforts toward malaria prevention and elimination. This year’s theme, “Drive to End Malaria: Now We Can, Now We Must,” highlights the urgency of accelerating action against the disease.
