The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Social Services, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society have collaborated to distribute essential WASH supplies to internally displaced persons (IDPs) and vulnerable households across five Local Government Areas of Sokoto State.
The distribution exercise covered Bodinga, Dange Shuni, Tureta, Tambuwal and Shagari Local Government Areas, with the active participation of SEMA Desk Officers from the five LGAs.
The intervention, supported by UNICEF, included 991 WASH dignity kits, as well as water purification tablets, aimed at improving access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene support among displaced and vulnerable families.
The allocation of the WASH dignity kits was based on available Multi-Sectoral Needs Assessment (MSNA) data, with the intervention designed to address the immediate humanitarian needs of displaced persons and vulnerable communities.
The distribution brought together government agencies, humanitarian partners and local emergency-response structures to ensure that the relief items reached the intended beneficiaries in a fair and transparent manner.
Speaking during interviews with beneficiaries, the recipients expressed appreciation to UNICEF for the humanitarian gesture. They also commended RUWASA, Sokoto SEMA, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Social Services, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, SEMA Desk Officers and other participating MDAs and organizations for ensuring the fair and orderly distribution of the relief items.
The beneficiaries noted that the supplies would provide important support to families affected by displacement, particularly in meeting their water, sanitation and hygiene needs.
The intervention demonstrates the continued commitment of the Sokoto State Government and its humanitarian partners to strengthening emergency response and supporting vulnerable and displaced communities across the state.
