Dan’iya Pledges to Actualise Federal Polytechnic Yabo, Questions Two-Year Delay in Project Take-Off
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Governorship Candidate in Sokoto State, Hon. Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, has pledged that his administration, if elected, will work with the Federal Government, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the Senator and Members of the House of Representatives from Sokoto South Senatorial District to ensure the full actualisation of the Federal Polytechnic, Yabo, describing the institution as a strategic investment in education, skills development and the economic future of Sokoto South.
In a statement signed by his Media Aide, Aminu Abdullahi, Dan’iya said it was unacceptable that a project intended to expand access to tertiary and technical education in Sokoto State should remain at the preparatory stage for so long. He noted that the proposed Federal Polytechnic Yabo has gone through approval and preparatory processes, including site activities and inspection, yet about two years after the process began, the permanent site is still awaiting key steps, including compensation and actual construction, according to information available to the campaign. He said such prolonged delay requires urgent explanation and decisive intervention.
Dan’iya noted that a Federal Ministry of Education delegation, accompanied by NBTE officials, inspected the proposed temporary site in Yabo in July 2025, while the 2026 Sokoto State Budget provides ₦460 million for renovation of the temporary site of the Federal Polytechnic Yabo. He said these developments demonstrate that the project has moved beyond a mere proposal, making it even more important for all relevant authorities to establish a clear timeline for completing the outstanding processes and commencing full operations. He said his administration would pursue the matter vigorously with the Federal Government and relevant agencies rather than allow the project to remain indefinitely in administrative limbo.
The ADC candidate pledged that, if elected Governor, he would make the actualisation of the Polytechnic one of his administration’s priority education engagements with the Federal Government. Working alongside the Senator representing Sokoto South and the Federal House of Representatives members from the zone, his government would pursue the resolution of outstanding land, compensation, infrastructural and administrative issues and demand a clearly defined implementation timetable. He said Sokoto South deserves a federal tertiary institution that will give the zone a stronger sense of inclusion in the state’s education architecture.
Dan’iya said his vision for the institution goes beyond merely opening its gates. He envisages a modern polytechnic equipped with laboratories, engineering workshops, digital learning facilities, innovation and entrepreneurship centres and programmes aligned with the needs of Nigeria’s emerging technology and industrial economy. He said students from low-income families should have meaningful opportunities to acquire technical skills, while the institution itself should become a catalyst for employment, entrepreneurship, local commerce and economic development in Yabo and neighbouring communities.
He added that the Federal Polytechnic Yabo would complement his broader education agenda, which includes expanding access to quality education, strengthening science and technical education, integrating technology and artificial intelligence into learning, supporting exceptionally talented students and creating stronger pathways from education to employment. He stressed that two years is too long for a project of such importance to remain without a clear path to full implementation, particularly when young people across Sokoto South are waiting for institutions that can provide them with practical skills and higher educational opportunities.
Dan’iya therefore reaffirmed that an ADC administration would pursue the actualisation of the Federal Polytechnic Yabo with urgency, working constructively with the Federal Government, NBTE, National Assembly members and other stakeholders to move the project from preparation to construction and ultimately to full academic operations. He said the people of Yabo and the entire Sokoto South Senatorial District deserve to see the project become a functioning institution rather than another development promise left waiting for years.
