The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Zamfara State has organized an awareness-raising session for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), election officials, and disability desk officers, aimed at strengthening the participation of PWDs in the 2027 electoral processes.

Speaking at the event, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Zamfara State, Dr. Mahmud Isa, stated that the meeting was organized to provide PWDs with a platform to express their experiences, identify the challenges they encounter, and offer recommendations to improve electoral accessibility across the state’s 14 local government areas.

Dr. Mahmud Isa explained that the objective of the session is to gain a deeper understanding of the difficulties faced by PWDs during electoral activities, while identifying ways to ensure they can effectively participate in the democratic process.

He emphasized that as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue, it is essential for INEC to keep enhancing an inclusive electoral system, ensuring information is easily accessible, treating voters with respect, and providing appropriate assistance to those who require it.

In his remarks, the representative from the INEC national headquarters, Malam Musa Zubair, stated that the program was organized to foster a better understanding among stakeholders regarding the importance of including persons with disabilities in the electoral process.

This includes ensuring their access to polling locations and raising awareness of the measures the Commission has implemented to protect their electoral rights.

He emphasized that the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the electoral process, whether as voters, candidates, or election officials is vital for building an inclusive democracy that offers everyone the opportunity to participate in governance.

Malam Zubair added that INEC is committed to identifying and eliminating any challenges that might hinder the effective participation of persons with disabilities at any stage of the electoral process.

The meeting is part of INEC’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness among persons with disabilities and ensure they have full access to participate in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
