How Tinubu Can Build Public Trust----Prof Mansur Ibrahim Sokoto
Professor Mansur Sokoto has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to draw lessons from recent events in Niger and focus on rebuilding public trust to foster a stronger bond between the government and its citizens.
Speaking during a sermon in Sokoto, Prof. Sokoto highlighted the deep-seated mistrust and hostility many Nigerians feel toward their leaders, attributing it to years of perceived neglect and failed leadership. He noted that this growing divide has made it easier for people to believe unverified allegations against the government.
“I urge the Nigerian government to reflect on the current situation and use it as a wake-up call. Why do Nigerians readily believe such allegations? Why do they resort to cursing their leaders? It is because of the profound mistrust that exists,” he said.
The professor explained that the disconnect stems from the government’s failure to demonstrate genuine concern for the welfare of the people. Using the recently introduced tax reforms as an example, he criticized the administration’s approach.
“The reforms are widely viewed as harmful to the country, yet the president appears resolute in pushing them forward. Is this an expression of love, empathy, or compassion? The leadership must bridge the gap between its policies and the people’s interests,” he stated.
Prof. Sokoto urged Nigerian authorities to take deliberate steps to rebuild legitimacy and trust. He advised against actions that deepen mistrust, such as corruption, financial mismanagement, and unnecessary expenditures on luxuries like private jets and extravagant foreign tours.
“Nigerian leaders must curtail excessive borrowing, especially for non-essential items. This sends the wrong message to the people who are already struggling,” he emphasized.
