Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, has directed the immediate constitution of a high-powered committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire outbreak at Nurul Haqq Quranic and Arabic School in Birnin Kebbi.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday evening, affected several hostels and classrooms within the school premises.
Governor Idris issued the directive shortly after personally supervising emergency response efforts at the scene.
The Governor, who was on his way to break his Ramadan fast, noticed thick smoke billowing along the roadside and promptly instructed his convoy to stop and ascertain the source of the smoke. Upon discovering that the smoke was emanating from the school premises, the Governor immediately ordered the evacuation of all students and contacted the Kebbi State Fire Service and other emergency responders to swiftly contain the situation. His prompt intervention ensured that rescue operations commenced without delay.
Despite observing his fast, Governor Idris remained at the scene throughout the emergency operation, personally monitoring the evacuation process to ensure that all over 140 students were safely moved out of harm’s way and properly accounted for. He stayed until the fire was completely extinguished, placing the safety and welfare of the children above personal comfort.
Describing the incident as unfortunate, the Governor expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah that no lives ware lost. He noted that the presence of gas cylinders in some of the students’ rooms contributed to the intensity of the fire, which firefighters battled for approximately three to four hours before bringing it under control.
Governor Idris commended the Kebbi State Fire Service for its prompt response, professionalism, and dedication in managing the situation effectively . He also reassured parents and guardians that all the affected students are safe, in stable condition, and have been relocated to the school’s main branch.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to the safety and security of students across Kebbi State.
He emphasized that the investigative committee will thoroughly examine the root causes of the incident and recommend appropriate measures to prevent any recurrence in schools throughout the state.
