The Governorship Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Sokoto State, Hon. Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, has expressed strong support for the party’s 2027 presidential candidate, His Excellency Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, over his proposal to restore a targeted and accountable fuel subsidy regime if elected President of Nigeria. Dan’iya described the proposal as a people-centred economic intervention capable of reducing the burden of high transportation costs, food prices and other essential commodities on Nigerian families.

In a statement issued by his Media Aide, Aminu Abdullahi, Hon. Dan’iya said the economic hardship currently confronting millions of Nigerians requires bold and practical solutions rather than policies that continue to place the greatest burden on ordinary citizens. He said the removal of petrol subsidy in 2023 significantly increased transportation and production costs, with the effects reflected in the prices of food and other basic necessities. According to him, Atiku’s proposed approach should focus on targeted support, transparency, accountability and strengthening domestic fuel production so that the benefits reach Nigerians rather than becoming a channel for waste and corruption.

The ADC gubernatorial candidate said Atiku Abubakar possesses the experience, political maturity and understanding of Nigeria’s economy required to implement such a policy responsibly. He noted that the former Vice President’s proposal is not simply about returning to an old subsidy arrangement, but about designing a more effective system that protects vulnerable Nigerians while simultaneously encouraging domestic refining and reducing the country’s dependence on imported petroleum products. “At a time when Nigerian families are struggling to afford transportation, food and basic necessities, any credible policy capable of reducing the cost of living deserves serious consideration,” Dan’iya said.

Hon. Dan’iya further described Atiku as a leader with extensive national and international experience who understands the need to rebuild Nigeria’s institutions, stimulate productive economic activity, create jobs and restore investor confidence. He said the ADC presidential candidate’s commitment to practical economic reforms, institutional strengthening and inclusive governance represents an opportunity for Nigerians to pursue a different direction in 2027. He urged Nigerians not to allow political sentiment to prevent them from examining policies based on their potential impact on the lives of ordinary citizens.

He called on ADC members, supporters and Nigerians across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to rally behind the Atiku Abubakar-led presidential ticket and other ADC candidates in the 2027 general elections. “The 2027 election is an opportunity for Nigerians to choose a government that understands their hardship and is prepared to act. We must support policies that reduce the burden on our people, restore hope, strengthen institutions and put Nigeria back on the path of sustainable development,” he said.

Hon. Dan’iya reaffirmed his commitment to the progress of the ADC and expressed confidence that an Atiku-led Federal Government, working with progressive state administrations, can address insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, infrastructure deficits and other challenges confronting the country. He urged Nigerians to support the ADC as a platform for political change and national renewal, saying the party’s objective should be to rescue Nigeria from hardship, restore confidence in government and build a country where economic opportunity and good governance are accessible to all.
