Political strategist Umar Ardo says the proposed opposition merger ahead of the 2027 election faces a major challenge over whether Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi would be willing to step aside.
Ardo says Atiku is highly unlikely to withdraw from the race, while Peter Obi may be more willing to step down. However, he says Obi could face resistance from his support base if he chooses to do so.
According to Ardo, resolving these leadership and support-base concerns will be crucial if the opposition is to form a workable alliance ahead of 2027.
