The Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society has called for adequate measures to empower Imams and scholars as part of measures to strengthen the nation’s anti-corruption efforts.

National Chief Imam of the society, Sheikh Fuad Adeyemi, made the call today in Sokoto at a two-day “Capacity Strengthening and for Imams, Scholars and Women '' organised by Alhabibiyah Islamic society.

Imam Adeyemi said the meeting was meant to equip imams and women scholars with the requisite skills and expose them to opportunities that could be harnessed for income generating activities for them to preach best on teaching on islam.

"If Imams, scholars and Women's were gainfully employed, they would not compromise standards and would also be able to empower others too for the benefit of society, especially parents that send their underage children into Almajiris".

Adeyemi said the programme was to deepen Al-Habibiyyah’s year-long engagement with imams on the need for them to have profitable economic ventures that would in turn reduce, if not eliminate, their dependence on funding from their congregants.

Presenting a paper on the topic, “Necessity of Income Generating Activities for Islamic Scholars/Leaders,”  a lecturer in the department of Islamic studies Shehu Shagari college of education Sokoto Dr Muhammad Abdullahi,  explained that Islam encourages the creation, acquisition and consumption of wealth, and the fulfilling of certain conditions in so doing.

He therefore charged Imams and Islamic scholars to fully engage themselves in businesses for them to be self reliant.

The event had in attendance Imams, Islamic scholars, and some Islamic organization representatives among others.
