Tax Reform Bills: Kano Government advice Tinubu

The Kano State Government has firmly rejected the proposed tax reform bills currently under consideration by the National Assembly, describing them as detrimental to the welfare of Nigerians.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by his Deputy, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, made the government’s stance clear during the 2025 New Year celebrations held at Filin Mahaha, Kofar Naisa Open Theatre. This was disclosed in a statement issued by the deputy governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Garba Shu’aibu.

“The proposed tax reform bill is not the solution to our economic challenges,” the governor stated. “Kano State stands firmly against any policy that negatively affects the welfare of our people.”

Governor Yusuf criticized the timing of the tax hike, labelling it “ill-timed, lopsided, and inimical to national unity.” He highlighted the severe economic hardships faced by Nigerians, particularly in the North, due to hyperinflation and insecurity. The governor called on the presidency to prioritize addressing extreme poverty and hunger in the region.

Despite these challenges, the governor commended the resilience of Kano residents and reassured them of his administration's commitment to improving their welfare. He outlined key achievements in healthcare, education, road construction, and foreign scholarship initiatives.

Governor Yusuf also reminded residents of the January 2024 Supreme Court ruling that confirmed him as the duly elected governor of Kano State, emphasizing the legitimacy of his leadership.

The statement further highlighted the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II in 2024, which Gwarzo described as a victory for the people’s will. He reiterated that the authority to appoint an emir rests solely with the Governor of Kano State, urging those interfering in Kano Emirate affairs to respect the law and uphold peace.

Addressing the people of Kano, Gwarzo encouraged unity and perseverance, stating, “Let 2025 be a year of shared prosperity and progress. Together, we will build a stronger Kano.”
