Prof. Garba was quoted saying “The admission process for the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 academic session has just been completed and is indeed the reason why we are here today.

“For the 2021/2022 academics session, the University received a total of 3,579 undergraduate applications out of which 1,789 candidates gained admission into their prospective programmes of interest.

“While for the 2022/2023 academic session, a total of 6,480 candidates applied for admission but only 2,626 making hundred percent of the total quota, secured admission for the various degree programmes of the University.

“This brings the total admitted candidates for the two academic sessions to 4,415 students out of which only 2,902 students registered for the combined academic session”.

He disclosed that the two sessions had to be merged due to the eight months of strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of the University (ASUU) in the country.

While congratulating the newly matriculated students of the Institution for being so lucky to get admission into the prestigious SSU, the Vice-Chancellor charged them to be committed to their studies so they would not lose the golden opportunity of acquiring university education.

He commended the effort of the Sokoto state government for its support to the University. Prof. Garba, however, appealed to the state government to consider paying the visiting and sabbatical lecturers as and when due.

The Vice-Chancellor said the University is so much relying on the support of this category of lecturers, most especially for the Postgraduate programmes.

Prof. Garba added that the visiting and sabbatical lecturers have outstanding salaries which need to be paid because many of them come from far places and need the salary to support their journey.

Enumerating some of the development recorded recently, the Vice-Chancellor said the construction of the faculties of Engineering and Agriculture, alongside the Centre for the Study of the Sokoto Caliphate, has been completed, while the construction of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computing has reached an advanced level of completion.

Speaking earlier, the Hon. Commissioner, Ministry for Higher Education, Prof. Aisha Madawaki Isah, MFR, said during the previous accreditation exercises conducted by the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Sokoto State Government, under the able leadership of Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, CFR (Mutawallen Sokoto), Visitor to the University, provided the University with all the required facilities ranging from the constriction of the ultra-modern university library, six number offices complex for academic staff, automation of e-library, supply of books, periodicals, and other e-resources to the University Library, recruitment of additional academic staff among others.

She further noted that the state government’s interventions yielded a positive result because all the programmes presented to the NUC got full accreditation.  And it is that success that paved the way for the Commission’s approval for the University to commence postgraduate programmes and mount additional 16 undergraduate programmes.

The Commissioner, therefore, urged the matriculated students to be motivated by such high ideals by being hard-working students, who are committed to their studies and the pursuit of academic excellence.

She expressed her delight on the achievements recorded so far by the University in all areas of academic excellence, ranging from infrastructure development, research outputs, staff and students welfare, teaching, and community service. Prof. Madawaki attributed such successes to appointing experienced and committed hands to steer the ship of an organization like a university.
