Sokoto L-PRES Conducts Training on Surveys and Monitoring Reports for Farmer-Herder Conflict Resolution Committee

As part of ongoing efforts to reduce farmer-herder clashes across Sokoto State, the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) has organized a capacity-building training on surveys and monitoring reports related to issues affecting farmers and herders.

The training brought together local government chairmen, directors of agriculture, traditional rulers, Fulani and farmers' associations, representatives of the security agencies and members of the L-PRES Project Implementation Unit (PIU).

The training which facilitated by Hajiya Sumayya Abubakar, Engineer Ismael and Dr. Asma'u Muhammad Bashar was aimed at equipping participants with the skills needed to conduct effective surveys and generate monitoring reports to support the collection and analysis of data on farmer-herder conflicts. It also aimed to strengthen stakeholders’ capacity to identify and respond to conflict triggers in affected communities.

In his welcome address, the Sokoto State Project Coordinator, Sirajo Abubakar, emphasized the need for both herders and farmers to embrace peace for the collective benefit of society.

He noted that the farmer-herder conflict has remained a longstanding challenge and continues to escalate, highlighting the urgent need for collaborative efforts to address the issue sustainably.

Sirajo Abubakar reiterated the commitment of the L-PRES project to ending this crisis in Sokoto State and appealed to all stakeholders—especially local government chairmen—to support the initiative.

Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, Sa’in Kilgori Dr. Muhammad Jabbi Kilgori stated that the Sultanate Council is committed to partnering with L-PRES in addressing the problem.

He stressed that all hands must be on deck to curtail the ongoing conflict that continues to affect both farmers and herders.
