Sokoto Govt Begins Training of Boat Operators to Curb Flood and Mishap Disasters in the State
The Sokoto State Government, through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), has commenced the formal training of boat drivers and operators across the state as part of ongoing efforts to prevent flood-related accidents and boat mishaps.
The exercise follows the recent procurement of 20-seater motorized fiber boats and 1,000 life-saving jackets by the Sokoto State Government.
The equipment, earlier inspected by Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto—represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Muhammad Idris Gobir—was showcased during a ceremony at the Sokoto Furniture Factory.
According to officials, the training is designed to equip boat operators with the necessary knowledge, skills, and technical expertise to safely manage water transport and properly use life-saving equipment. The initiative is expected to significantly enhance safety measures, particularly during flood emergencies.
The official flag-off and distribution of the boats and life jackets will take place upon completion of the training. Local government officials will oversee the deployment of the equipment across 10 flood-prone local government areas in the state.
Speaking on the development, the Director of Relief and Rehabilitation at Sokoto SEMA, Mustapha Umar, emphasized the importance of the initiative. He noted that the provision of the boats and jackets would play a vital role in safeguarding both operators and passengers, recalling the tragic boat mishaps recorded in recent years, including incidents that claimed several lives in 2025.
On behalf of the Special Adviser to SEMA, Hon. Aminu Liman Bodinga, Umar commended the foresight of the Sokoto State Government in prioritizing the safety and welfare of its citizens.
