Sokoto Government to Rehabilitate Flood-Damaged, Sokoto–Sabon-Birni Road
In response to recent flooding that damaged the Sokoto–Sabon-Birni road and surrounding communities, the Sokoto State Government has directed immediate assessment and rehabilitation works.
A delegation of engineers from the State Ministry of Works, led by the Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad K., visited the affected sections of the road on the directive of the Governor of Sokoto State, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, FCNA. The road, which also connects Sabon-Birni to the Niger Republic, suffered severe destruction from heavy flooding.
During the visit, the delegation was joined by the Member Representing Sabon-Birni Constituency, Hon. Aminu Boza, alongside officials from the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), the State Ministry of Works, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society. Together, the team carried out an on-the-spot assessment of the damage to guide relief and recovery interventions.
According to reports from the Sabon-Birni Local Government Authority, the floods not only destroyed critical sections of the Sokoto–Sabon-Birni road network but also submerged farmlands and damaged homes in communities such as Makuwana, Dangawo, ’Yan Faruna, Faru, and Kumbula.
Speaking after the inspection, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad K. noted that engineers have already commenced technical studies to determine urgent remedial measures.
The permanent Secretary emphasized that the government is committed to restoring the road network to ease transportation, enhance connectivity, and safeguard livelihoods.
The floods have also dealt a major setback to agriculture in the area, as farmlands remain waterlogged and crops destroyed, heightening concerns about food security for residents.
The Sokoto State Government has assured residents of its readiness to address the infrastructural and humanitarian challenges posed by the floods.
