National Convention: Why PDP Chooses Kano

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has once again turned to Kano, the ancient commercial hub of Northern Nigeria, to host its national convention, scheduled for August 28-30, 2025.
This decision, announced by the PDP Governors Forum in April 2025, and affirmed by the 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Party in May, 2025, is not merely logistical but a calculated move steeped in political strategy, historical significance, and a desire to reposition the party for the 2027 general elections.
While some may view this choice as routine, a closer examination reveals why Kano is not just a venue but a symbol of the PDP’s aspirations.
Kano’s selection reflects the PDP’s intent to reconnect with its grassroots base in Northern Nigeria, a region critical to any party’s national ambitions.
As one of Nigeria’s most populous states, Kano wields significant electoral influence, often dubbed the “political heartbeat” of the North.
The state’s diverse population, blending urban and rural voters, offers a microcosm of Nigeria itself—making it an ideal stage for the PDP to project unity and strength.
By choosing Kano, the party signals its commitment to reclaiming lost grounds in recent elections.
Historically, Kano has been a battleground for political supremacy. The state’s political landscape is shaped by a legacy of progressive politics, from the days of Mallam Aminu Kano and the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU) to the modern era of competition between political parties.
The PDP’s decision to hold its national convention here is a nod to this history, an attempt to tap into the state’s tradition of populist and reform-minded politics.
This move underscores the PDP’s desire to present a united front in a state where loyalty and grassroots mobilization are paramount.
In my view, the PDP’s choice of Kano is a statement of ambition. It’s a recognition that to win in 2027, the party must not only resolve internal divisions but also win over the hearts of voters in key battlegrounds.
Kano, with its rich history, electoral weight, and symbolic value, is the perfect place to start.
