When Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, he inherited a nation burdened by deep rooted challenges that had intensified over the years under Muhammadu Buhari. Nigeria at the time faced severe insecurity, with the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project documenting tens of thousands of conflict related deaths between 2015 and 2023. Poverty had also reached unprecedented levels, as the National Bureau of Statistics reported that over 133 million Nigerians were living in multidimensional poverty as of 2022.
The crisis extended beyond economics into governance and social cohesion. Nigeria ranked 150 out of 180 countries in the 2022 corruption perception index published by Transparency International, reflecting deep concerns about accountability. At the same time, ethno religious tensions and political divisions widened, while public confidence in leadership declined significantly, with surveys by Afrobarometer showing growing dissatisfaction with democratic governance.
It was within this atmosphere of uncertainty and declining trust that Tinubu introduced the Renewed Hope Agenda. The initiative focuses on economic recovery, institutional reform, improved security, and inclusive national development. Early policy actions such as fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate adjustments were aimed at stabilizing the economy and restoring long term confidence, even though they brought short term hardship and inflationary pressure.
Such challenges are not unusual in ambitious reform programmes. History offers useful parallels. The New Deal introduced by Franklin D Roosevelt faced initial resistance but later transformed the American economy. Similarly, the Economic Reforms of Deng Xiaoping led by Deng Xiaoping encountered early difficulties before laying the foundation for China’s rise as a global economic power.
At the subnational level, the emergence of the Kano First Agenda under Abba Kabir Yusuf represents a focused effort to align local development priorities with national direction. The agenda places the people of Kano at the center of governance, emphasizing economic revitalization, improved public services, and strategic infrastructure development tailored to the needs of the state.
The alignment between Kano First Agenda and the Renewed Hope Agenda is already creating meaningful synergy. For a long time, political differences between Kano and the federal government limited access to certain opportunities and slowed development. Today, that gap is narrowing, creating a more cooperative environment for growth and progress.
This renewed relationship is beginning to yield visible outcomes. Increased federal attention to infrastructure, agriculture, and social investment programmes in Kano reflects a new phase of collaboration. The peaceful conduct of recent elections and improved political stability further reinforce this progress, signaling a more mature and coordinated governance structure.
For the people of Kano, this moment demands active support and engagement. No government agenda can succeed without the backing of the citizens it is designed to serve. Public cooperation, civic responsibility, and trust in leadership are essential ingredients for translating policy into real impact.
Across the world, successful development stories consistently highlight the role of citizens in sustaining reform efforts. When people align with government initiatives and contribute positively, policies gain momentum and deliver lasting benefits that extend across generations.
Today, the collaboration between Kano First Agenda and the Renewed Hope Agenda is producing tangible results across multiple sectors. Improvements are being recorded in security, education, healthcare, agriculture, commerce, empowerment initiatives, and road construction. These outcomes, though still evolving, demonstrate a clear direction of progress.
With sustained commitment from both leadership and citizens, Kano is steadily positioning itself for a stronger and more prosperous future. The full impact of this alignment will sure be realized in the nearest future, but the foundation being laid today is both promising and transformative.
