Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, has visited the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Birnin Kebbi, where the remains of security personnel killed in a bandits’ ambush at Giron Masa village in Shanga Local Government Area were deposited, and later proceeded to the scene of the tragic incident.
The Governor’s visit followed a deadly ambush in which nine soldiers, one Mobile Police (MOPOL) officer and a civilian lost their lives while responding to a distress call to protect residents of the affected community from a planned bandit attack.
At the Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, Governor Idris was received by Dr. Ashiru Ladan, Head of Clinical Services, who led him to the mortuary where the corpses of the fallen security personnel were kept.
The Governor also visited two other security personnel who sustained gunshot injuries and were receiving treatment at the hospital.
Speaking during the visit, Governor Idris described the incident as highly unfortunate, painful, noting that it was a great loss not only to the security agencies but also to the entire people of Kebbi State.
He said the fallen officers were gallant men who paid the supreme sacrifice in the course of defending innocent citizens and ensuring peace and security in the state.
Governor Idris directed the management of FMC Birnin Kebbi to ensure that the injured personnel receive the best possible medical attention, assuring them that the Kebbi State Government would take full responsibility for their treatment.
He further pledged that the State Government would do everything possible to support the families of those who lost their lives in active service, stressing that Kebbi State remains committed to standing by security personnel who continue to make sacrifices for the safety of the people.
From the hospital, the Governor proceeded to Giron Masa village in Shanga Local Government Area, where the ambush occurred.
At the scene, Governor Idris inspected the destroyed military vehicle attacked by the bandits, describing the incident as a very sad and painful development for the state.
He explained that the military personnel had mobilized in response to intelligence indicating that bandits were planning to attack a community in the area, but were unfortunately lured into a deadly ambush laid by the criminals.
The Governor said the tragic development underscored the dangers being faced daily by security operatives in the line of duty, and reiterated the resolve of his administration to continue giving maximum support to all security agencies operating in Kebbi State.
He announced that he would proceed to Abuja to meet with the Chief of Army Staff to formally convey the condolences of the Government and people of Kebbi State over the loss.
Governor Idris also promised to replaced the destroyed vehicle also urged the military and other security agencies not to be discouraged by the attack, but to remain resolute, professional and committed to their constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property.
While receiving the Governor at Giron Masa village, the Emir of Yauri, Dr. Zayyanu Abdullahi, expressed deep concern over the recurring security challenges and emphasized the need for improved intelligence gathering, reconnaissance and the deployment of modern technology, including drones, to reduce casualties and strengthen security operations.
The traditional ruler commended the Governor for his prompt visit and concern over the incident, while praying for lasting peace and protection for the state and the nation at large.
Governor Idris also prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased security personnel and for the quick recovery of those injured.
