Democracy Must Work, Says Senator Tambuwal in Stirring Democracy Day Message
As Nigeria marks this year’s Democracy Day, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has called for renewed commitment to democratic ideals, insisting that democracy must not be seen as a deferred dream, but a promise that must be delivered.
In a passionate message posted on his official X handle, the former Governor of Sokoto State and current Chairman of the Senate Committee on Lands, Housing and Urban Development described democracy as a continuous journey, one that demands active citizenship, functional institutions, and leadership anchored on accountability.
“Democracy is not merely about elections,” he wrote. “It is about institutions that function, laws that protect the vulnerable, and governance that prioritises the people. It is about the freedom to speak truth to power, to dissent without fear, and to demand better without intimidation.”
Senator Tambuwal urged Nigerians not to give in to apathy or despair, stressing that too much has been sacrificed for the country to retreat from the path of democratic progress.
“This democracy must work, for the market woman, the jobless graduate, the struggling farmer, the voiceless child, and every Nigerian who still believes in the possibility of a better nation,” he added.
He emphasised the urgent need to rebuild public trust, deepen democratic reforms, protect the sanctity of the ballot, and restore dignity to public service, not as a privilege, but as a duty to the republic.
Calling for national unity across religious and regional lines, the Senator affirmed that the country’s future lies not in strongmen but in strong institutions and an active citizenry.
“This is our moment. Let us rise. Let us lead. Let us make democracy truly work.”
Senator Tambuwal concluded the message by wishing Nigerians a reflective and hopeful Democracy Day.
