Clash between villagers and herders in Jigawa, 9 People die

Nine people lost their lives, and four others sustained injuries following a violent clash between villagers and herders in Miga and Jahun Local Government Areas of Jigawa State.

The Jigawa State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the incident, which unfolded on Friday. According to reports, the conflict began in Gululu village, Miga LGA, after villagers discovered a shop had been burgled, with items stolen. Suspecting herders were responsible, the villagers tracked footprints to a Fulani settlement in Yankunama village, Jahun LGA.

Upon reaching the settlement, the villagers reportedly faced resistance. "The Fulanis began shooting at them with bows and arrows, injuring four villagers seriously," SP Adam stated. In retaliation, the villagers mobilized and launched a counterattack on the settlement, escalating the conflict.

The violence resulted in widespread destruction, with homes in both Miga and Jahun LGAs set ablaze. Tragically, nine people were killed in the chaos, and their bodies were recovered and taken to hospitals in Jahun and Miga, where medical personnel confirmed their deaths.

In response, the Jigawa State Police Command dispatched officers from Miga and Jahun divisions to the scene to restore peace. The Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi, accompanied by senior officers, including the Area Commander Dutse, Assistant Commissioner of Police, and the Department of Operations, also visited the affected areas to assess the situation firsthand.

A stakeholder meeting followed the incident, involving government officials, traditional leaders, and representatives of Miyetti Allah, a prominent herdsmen association. The meeting emphasized the need for calm and pledged efforts to prevent further violence.

The police have launched a thorough investigation into the incident and increased patrols in the affected areas to maintain order. SP Adam assured the public that all perpetrators would be brought to justice.

While the situation is now under control, tensions remain high in the region, with calls for restraint and peaceful coexistence to prevent future clashes.
