Buhari Construct 6,761 Water schemes in the urban, semi urban and rural areas of the country with an output of 794,334,000 liters per day for the water supply needs of about 32 million people.
The Honorable minister of water resources ENG. Suleiman Adamu at the 29 regular meeting of the national council on water resources holding at the international conference Centre Sokoto recently said under the sanitation sub-sector, 3,402 sanitation facilities have been constructed by the ministry in institutions and public places such as schools, markets and IDP and etc.
Suleiman furthermore said in addition as part of our efforts to address the menace of open defecation in Nigeria by the year 2025, “we have since 2019 embarked on a nation-wide campaign though the ‘clean Nigeria: Use the toilet’ campaign secretariat in line with the executive order No.9 signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.
“the campaign is also to address SDG target 6.2 for sanitation with a view to attaining universal and equitable access to safely managed sanitation services for all by the year 2030.” He said.
He explain that as at December 2022, one state and a total of 100 local Government Areas nationwide have been certified open defecation free up from only one local government first so certified in 2017.
The minister in keynote address said as part of our efforts towards proper harnessing of both surface and groundwater, the ministry has constructed 260 dams across the country and impounded 34B CM of bulk water in dam reservoirs for multi-purpose use, including water supply, sanitation, irrigation, hydropower generation and others.
In his welcome address commissioner of water resources Sokoto Alhaji Dahiru Yusuf Yabo welcome all the participants said “we are indeed, elated and honored for the choice of Sokoto to host this distinguished gathering of crème da la crème in the water industry of our dear country.
“it might interest you to know that, all 23 local government have been provided with urban water schemes and the state government under the able leadership of Aminu Waziri Tambuwal express his zeal to ensure that all dams and canals in the state are re-constructed, rehabilitated and been put to use again as soon as possible.” He said.
