FOEGCAN Raises Deep Concern Over Escalating Insecurity in Northern Nigeria

The Forum of Ex-Governorship Candidates of Nigeria (FOEGCAN) expresses grave concern over the worsening security situation across Northern Nigeria, particularly during this sacred month of Ramadan — a period meant for peace, reflection, and spiritual devotion.

Recent tragic events, including the reported bandits’ attack on Gwana District in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State and the ISWAP attack on a military base in Adamawa State, are deeply alarming. In addition, the persistent farmers–herders clashes and rising tribal tensions across several communities pose serious threats to national unity, food security, and peaceful coexistence.

FOEGCAN considers these developments heartbreaking and unacceptable, especially at a time when citizens expect heightened security and protection from the government.

Call to Action

We call on:

  1. The Federal and State Governments:
To urgently intensify security operations, strengthen intelligence gathering, and ensure adequate protection of lives and property across affected communities. The safety of citizens must remain the foremost constitutional responsibility of government at all levels.
  2. Security Agencies:
To enhance coordination, professionalism, and proactive engagement in vulnerable regions to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
  3. Political Parties and Leaders:
To immediately suspend unnecessary political distractions, congresses, and partisan rivalries that divert attention from the urgent security challenges confronting the nation. No meaningful political activity can thrive in an atmosphere of fear and instability. Peace and harmony are prerequisites for sustainable democracy.
  4. Traditional, Religious, and Community Leaders:
To promote dialogue, tolerance, and unity among citizens, and discourage divisive rhetoric that fuels conflict.
  5. The International Community:
To closely engage with Nigerian authorities and encourage responsible leadership, accountability, and proactive measures in addressing the escalating insecurity. The protection of citizens’ lives is a fundamental human right that must not be compromised.

Conclusion

Nigeria stands at a critical moment. FOEGCAN believes that with sincere leadership, coordinated security efforts, and genuine political will, the current security challenges can be overcome. We urge all stakeholders to act decisively and responsibly before the situation deteriorates further.

The lives of Nigerians must never be treated as collateral damage in political or institutional negligence.
