Gov. Idris, spectators thrilled at Kabanci Water Sports Display, colourful Kabi Durbar at the 61st Argungu Festival

The 61st Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival (AFF 2026) reached a breathtaking crescendo on its third day, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and sporting prowess of the Kebbi people.

The ancient city of Argungu was transformed into a vibrant hub of activities as thousands of spectators thronged the ancient city to witness the legendary Kabanci water Sports and the majestic Kabi Durbar.

An elated Gov. Nasir Idris, the Kauran Gwandu, presided over the day’s festivities with visible joy and gratitude, taking pride in the festival’s enduring ability to unite people across borders and cultures.

Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris and indeed the spectators were thrilled by the water sports,Kabanci display and the colorful durbar .

The morning session at the Mala Riverside was nothing short of spectacular, featuring the highly anticipated Kabanci (Water Sports) display.

Spectators were held spellbound by the Men Bare Hands Fishing and Wild Duck Catching events, where the participants prolifically demonstrated remarkable agility and traditional techniques passed down through a myriad of generations.

Among the most gruelling and cheered contests were the Swimming with Clay Pots and the Water Relay Race, which tested the endurance and skills of the local fishermen and proud youths, highlighting a unique blend of athleticism and cultural artistry that defines the Argungu spirit.

The youths were not left out, as the Boys Bare Hands Fishing and Boys Canoe Race showcased the next generation of aquatic experts.

These events underscored the festival’s role in mentoring young people and ensuring that the traditions of the Matan Fada River are preserved for years to come.

In a remarkable display of local ingenuity that stole the spotlight, an 18-year-old, Abubakar Suleiman Hassan, captivated the audience and dignitaries by showcasing a locally-fabricated vehicle he constructed himself, earning a standing ovation and wide admiration for his innovative spirit.

The afternoon session transitioned into a sea of colour and royalty at the Fishing Village for the Kabi Durbar, featuring a magnificent procession of decorated horses and riders that reflected the Emirate’s martial history and equestrian excellence.

The rhythmic drumming and gallantry of the horsemen created an atmosphere of pure enchantment.

The festival attracted a galaxy of eminent personalities, led by the Honourable Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, whose presence underscored the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to elevating the Argungu Festival as a premier global tourism destination.

Other dignitaries included the Deputy Governor, Umar Abubakar Tafida; the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu; and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Tanko Sununu, reflecting strong, mutual and robust extant state–federal collaboration.

The Emir of Argungu, Samaila Muhammad Mera, custodian of the ancient Argungu culture, led other traditional rulers at the event.

Also in attendance were Senators Adamu Aliero and Yahaya Abdullahi, former Governor Saidu Dakingari, and Member of the House of Representatives, Bello Abubakar Kaoje, among other top-notch political leaders.

The State’s administrative leadership was fully represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Yakubu Bala Tafida; the Head of Service, Malami Shekare; and the APC State Chairman, Abubakar Kana Zuru, alongside traditional rulers, religious leaders, and captains of industry from across Nigeria and beyond.

As the competitions concluded, prizes were presented to winners ranging from cash, cars, motorcycles and trophies. of the water sports and cultural displays.

The day ended with vibrant night-time cultural competitions and performances by renowned artists at the Cultural Arena. As the 61st edition moves towards its grand finale, the Kebbi State Government reaffirmed its commitment to projecting the state as the “Land of Equity” and a beacon of cultural tourism in Africa.

The event remains a cornerstone of Kebbi’s identity, fostering peace, unity, and economic growth through the celebration of ancestral traditions.
